Privacy Policy
For the ABQAC mobile app and abqac.org · Last updated 1 August 2026
The Africa Bible Quiz Association Consortium (“ABQAC”, “we”) runs Bible quiz tournaments across Africa and publishes the ABQAC mobile app, which quizzers use to practise, memorise scripture and follow competitions. This policy explains what the app and this website collect, why, and what control you have over it.
It is written to be read, not to be survived. If anything here is unclear, write to us at support@abqac.org and we will explain it.
1. What we collect
You can use the app without giving us anything
Practising, reading scripture and memorising verses all work without an account. If you never sign up, what you do stays on your phone and is tied only to a randomly generated device identifier, which is not linked to your name or your email.
If you create an account
| What | Why we ask | Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Shown on The Podium, to your coach, and printed on certificates. | Yes |
| Email address | Signing in and resetting your password. | Yes |
| Password | Stored only as a one-way hash. Nobody at ABQAC can read it. | Yes |
| Phone number | An alternative way to sign in, and how a coach reaches you. | No |
| Date of birth | Tournaments have age categories. | No |
| Country, city, church | Regional leaderboards, and connecting you to your team. | No |
| Profile photo | Shown on your profile and to your team. Chosen by you. | No |
| Short bio | Shown on your profile. | No |
What the app records as you use it
- Quiz sessions, the answers you gave and whether they were right
- Verses you have memorised and how well you recalled them
- XP, level, streak and achievements
- Duels you played and the result
- Which tournaments you enrolled in and your preparation plan
This is the app's whole purpose — without it there is no progress to show you, no leaderboard and no revision schedule.
Technical information
- A device identifier the app generates for itself
- Device model, Android version, app version and build number
- Your language and time zone, so reminders and the daily reset happen at the right local time
- A notification token, if you allow notifications
We do not collect: your contacts, your location, your photos beyond the single image you pick for your profile, your microphone audio (see below), your browsing outside the app, or anything for advertising. There are no ads in this app and no advertising or analytics SDKs in it.
2. Why we use it
- To run the app — serving questions, marking answers, scheduling revision, keeping your progress.
- To run competitions — enrolments, team rosters, leaderboards, certificates.
- To contact you about the quiz — practice reminders you have asked for, and tournament announcements.
- To keep the game fair — detecting duplicate accounts and abuse of the referral scheme.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We never will.
3. Children and young quizzers
Bible quizzing is largely a youth activity and many of our quizzers are under 18. We ask for as little as possible from everyone for that reason: the app works without an account at all, and every field beyond name, email and password is optional.
If you are under the age at which you can agree to this yourself in your country, please ask a parent, guardian or coach before creating an account. If you believe a child has given us information you would rather they had not, write to support@abqac.org and we will delete it.
4. Who else can see your information
- Other quizzers see your name, photo, level and XP on leaderboards, in your team, and when you duel them.
- Your coach sees the practice activity of quizzers on their team — how much they have practised and how accurate they are. Coaches do not see your password, and cannot sign in as you.
- ABQAC organisers see registration and tournament information in order to run competitions.
- Anyone with a certificate serial can check the name it was issued to. That is the point of a certificate — it is how somebody verifies the one you show them is real.
- Our hosting provider stores the data on our behalf. It is not used for anything else.
- Google, if you allow notifications, delivers them through Firebase Cloud Messaging.
5. Phone permissions, and what happens if you say no
| Permission | What it is for | If you decline |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Reciting a verse aloud so the app can mark it, and speaking an answer instead of typing it. Recognition happens through your phone's own speech service. We do not record, store or upload audio — only the resulting text is compared on your device. | The microphone button disappears. Everything else works, and you type or self-mark as before. |
| Camera & photos | Choosing a profile picture, only at the moment you tap to add one. | You have no profile picture. Nothing else changes. |
| Notifications | Practice reminders and tournament announcements. Asked for after your first session, never on first launch. | No reminders. The app is otherwise unaffected. |
6. How long we keep it
- Your account and progress: for as long as your account exists.
- Guest activity on a device with no account: kept so your progress survives closing the app, and removed when you uninstall it or clear the app's data.
- Tournament results: kept as part of the association's competition record, in the same way a printed results sheet would be.
- Everything else: deleted when you delete your account.
7. Your choices
- See and correct your details — Profile › Edit profile in the app.
- Turn off notifications — Settings in the app, or in Android settings.
- Practise without an account — simply do not sign up.
- Ask for a copy of your data — write to support@abqac.org.
- Delete everything — see below.
8. Deleting your account
You can delete your account and your data at any time, from inside the app at Profile › Edit profile › Delete my account. It happens immediately; there is no waiting period.
If you have already uninstalled the app, you can ask us to do it for you:
9. Security
Traffic between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. Passwords are stored as one-way hashes and cannot be read back by anyone, including us. Access to the administration panel is limited to named ABQAC administrators and quiz masters. No system is perfect, and we will tell you promptly if something happens that affects your information.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of the page, and announce anything significant in the app. Continuing to use ABQAC after a change means you accept the updated policy.
